Can You Advertise Alcohol on Facebook? 2026 Rules
Can you advertise alcohol on Facebook?
Yes, in most places. Meta allows alcohol ads that comply with local laws, industry codes and licences, never target anyone under 18, and meet the higher minimum age it sets for some locations, up to 25. Meta lists countries and regions where alcohol ads are banned outright. Ads for non-alcoholic drinks are allowed if they show no alcohol.
Alcohol is a restricted category on Facebook, not a banned one. Meta lets brewers, distillers, wineries, bars and retailers advertise, provided the audience is old enough for the place it lives in and the ad follows that place’s law. The work is in the setup: a minimum age that matches every location you target, no reach into places where alcohol ads are prohibited, and nothing in a non-alcoholic ad that depicts alcohol.
What does Meta’s alcohol ad policy allow?
Meta’s Alcohol ad standard requires that ads promoting or referencing alcohol comply with all applicable local laws, required or established industry codes, guidelines, licences and approvals, and use age and country targeting consistent with Meta’s requirements and local law. The Help Center version, About Meta’s Alcohol advertising policy, puts the conditions in two lines: follow the targeting requirements for the location of the audience, and don’t target people under the age of 18.
Meta then sets out two lists. One names countries and regions where advertisers can’t run alcohol ads. The other names locations where alcohol ads are allowed subject to a set minimum age, which reaches 25 in some places. Anywhere on neither list, Meta allows alcohol ads that follow local law and target people at least 18. Rules can vary by country, so check both lists on Meta’s page for every location in your ad set before you launch.
What counts as an alcohol ad on Facebook?
More than a bottle shot. Meta’s list, and what it allows:
| Ad content | Counts as an alcohol ad? | Rule that applies |
|---|---|---|
| A bar, brewery tour or event whose business depends on alcohol sales | Yes | Full alcohol targeting rules |
| An invitation to an alcohol venue | Yes | Full alcohol targeting rules |
| A message that alcohol is available to buy, such as “now delivering” | Yes | Full alcohol targeting rules |
| An alcohol brand or logo, shown or promoted | Yes | Full alcohol targeting rules |
| People drinking alcohol | Yes | Full alcohol targeting rules |
| A cocktail or other alcoholic drink recipe | Yes | Full alcohol targeting rules |
| A non-alcoholic drink or an alcohol accessory, with no alcohol or drinking shown | No | Allowed, as long as it does not depict alcohol or consumption |
| News, documentary, educational or public service content | No | Allowed |
Sources for every row: Meta’s Alcohol ad standard and About Meta’s Alcohol advertising policy. In practice, read the condition on the second-to-last row strictly: our reading is that an alcohol-free spirit or a set of glasses shown next to a branded bottle or someone drinking becomes an alcohol ad again.
How do I set up an alcohol ad so it is approved?
- Read both country lists on Meta’s alcohol policy page and write down the minimum age for every location you plan to target.
- Remove any location where Meta prohibits alcohol ads from the plan.
- In Advertising settings, click Audience controls, toggle on “My business sells or advertises age-restricted goods or services” and choose the Minimum age.
- In the same panel, toggle on “My business can only advertise in specific locations” and include only the countries you cleared.
- In Ads Manager, open the ad set, find Audience, and set Locations and Minimum age under Controls to match your list.
- Leave “Reach more people likely to respond to your ads” off for locations, so delivery stays inside the countries you chose.
- If the ad uses the WhatsApp Status placement, deselect Unknown age on WhatsApp in Audience controls.
Steps 3 and 4 follow Set audience and placement controls for your ad account; Meta says these account controls apply to all campaigns in the ad account and are gradually rolling out, so you may not see them yet. Steps 5 and 6 follow Create a campaign using Advantage+ audience, which says a minimum age set in Audience controls can’t be overruled and that Meta won’t target beyond your location settings unless you select that reach option. Step 7 is explained below.
Why does the WhatsApp placement matter for alcohol ads?
Because it can reach people with no known age. Meta says that using the WhatsApp Status placement automatically includes people on WhatsApp whose age is unknown, and that ads delivered to them must be suitable for people of all ages (Age and gender targeting). An alcohol ad is not suitable for all ages, so deselect that option or leave the placement out. For how minimum age sits beside Meta’s other audience controls, see should I use Advantage+ audience or interest targeting?
What gets an alcohol ad rejected?
From the policy itself, three things: an audience that includes under-18s, a location where Meta prohibits alcohol ads, or an age setting below the minimum Meta sets for a location. Meta’s policy also requires compliance with industry codes, guidelines, licences and approvals that it does not spell out, so check your local advertising code as well as Meta’s lists.
Beyond the alcohol policy, the usual rules still apply. Copy that asserts or implies something about the viewer’s personal attributes runs into a separate Meta policy; see why was my Facebook ad rejected for personal attributes? If you believe an ad that followed every rule was rejected by mistake, request another review in Business Support Home, where Meta aims to decide within 48 hours (How to troubleshoot a rejected ad); the full route is in Facebook ad rejected, how do I appeal?
Can software help?
Bach.ai connects to your Meta ad account, audits it daily and estimates the revenue impact of what it finds, and it reports a disapproved ad as a policy blocker rather than weak performance. It applies changes on Meta only after you approve them. It does not decide which ages or countries your licence allows; for the rest of the policy review, use the Facebook ad policy guide.
FAQ
What is the minimum age for alcohol ads on Facebook?
At least 18 everywhere. Meta’s alcohol policy says not to target people under 18 and to follow the targeting requirements for the audience’s location, and it lists places where the minimum is higher, as high as 25. Set the highest minimum that applies to any location in the ad set.
Can I advertise non-alcoholic beer or spirits on Facebook?
Yes. Meta allows ads for non-alcoholic products, including non-alcoholic drinks and alcohol accessories, as long as they do not depict alcohol or its consumption. If the creative shows the brand’s alcoholic range, a branded bottle or someone drinking alcohol, it counts as an alcohol ad and the full targeting rules apply.
Can I post a cocktail recipe ad on Facebook?
Yes, but Meta treats recipes for alcoholic beverages as alcohol ads. That means the same conditions as a product ad: no one under 18, the higher minimum age where Meta sets one, no locations where alcohol ads are prohibited, and compliance with local law and industry codes.
Do the same rules apply on Instagram?
Yes. Meta’s Advertising Standards apply to paid advertising through its ad platform, including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and Audience Network, so the age, location and content rules for alcohol are the same wherever the ad runs.
