Advantage+ Audience vs Interests, What Wins 2026
Should I use Advantage+ audience or interest targeting?
Start with Advantage+ audience and enter your interests as suggestions. Meta says it typically beats the original audience options because its AI can reach people beyond your selections. Keep strict targeting for real business limits, using Meta's four audience controls: location, minimum age, excluded custom audiences and language. Test both before you switch.
For most ecommerce ad sets this is not an either-or choice. Advantage+ audience treats your interests as hints rather than walls, and Meta says that usually performs better than holding delivery to your selections. Use interests as a starting signal, put only true business limits into the hard controls, and prove the switch with a split test before you move spend away from an interest-targeted ad set that already makes money.
What is the difference between Advantage+ audience and interest targeting?
With interest targeting in the original audience setup, you choose detailed targeting (interests, behaviours and demographics) and delivery is meant to stay inside it. Advantage+ audience splits your settings into two kinds instead (Meta: audience controls and suggestions):
- Audience controls limit who can see your ads: locations, minimum age, custom audiences to exclude and languages.
- Audience suggestions guide delivery: age, gender, detailed targeting and custom audiences to include. Meta shows ads to people who match a suggestion, “and other audiences when it’s likely to improve performance”.
Advantage+ audience is applied automatically at the ad set level when it is available (Meta: create a campaign using Advantage+ audience). For the Sales, App promotion and Leads objectives, the audience section shows “Advantage+ on”, which Meta says is the same thing (Meta: choose audience settings).
Which settings are hard limits?
| Setting | How Advantage+ audience treats it | Can delivery go beyond it? | Meta source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Location | Control | No, unless you select “Reach more people likely to respond to your ads” | Create a campaign |
| Minimum age | Control, never below 18 (older in some countries) | No; Meta says the setting can’t be overruled | Create a campaign |
| Excluded custom audiences | Always a control, even if “Use as a suggestion” is ticked | No | Choose audience settings |
| Language | Control | No | Controls and suggestions |
| Age range and gender | Suggestion by default | Yes, when Meta predicts better performance | Controls and suggestions |
| Interests (detailed targeting) | Suggestion by default | Yes, when Meta predicts better performance | Use detailed targeting |
| Custom and lookalike audiences you include | Suggestion by default | Yes, when Meta predicts better performance | Create a campaign |
Does Advantage+ audience perform better than interests?
Meta’s own position is that Advantage+ audience “typically gets better results compared with the original audience options”, because its AI “is not limited to delivering ads to people that match your selections” (Meta). That page gives no figure, so read it as the platform’s claim about accounts in general, not a promise for yours.
Two facts narrow the choice before you test anything:
- Interests are rarely a hard wall in a sales campaign. If you optimise for link clicks, landing page views, conversations, conversions, app events, app installs or value, Meta applies Advantage+ detailed targeting automatically, “with no option to opt out” (Meta: use detailed targeting). That feature reaches “a broader group of people than you defined in your detailed targeting selections”, though it never touches location, age or gender (Meta: Advantage+ detailed targeting).
- Several interests widen the pool rather than narrow it. Three interests mean people who match any one of them, unless you add a narrowing condition (Meta).
So the honest comparison is not “Meta’s AI versus my interests”. It is “my interests as suggestions versus my interests plus whatever expansion my optimisation goal already allows”. The only way to know which wins for your offer is a controlled test, set out below. For the related choice between wide and tight audiences, see Should I use broad or narrow targeting on Meta?
Can Advantage+ audience show my ads outside my targeting?
Yes, outside your suggestions, but never outside your controls: “audience suggestions won’t be shown outside your audience controls” (Meta). Meta’s own example is that if you suggest women, men may still see the ads when its AI finds them likely to respond.
That is what people mean when they say Advantage+ audience is “expanding beyond my targeting”. It is deliberate, not a fault, and it changes how you read results:
- The result now describes your suggestion plus the expansion, so it is not proof that the interest you picked works.
- When an audience is expanded through Advantage+, Meta says the estimated audience size will not reflect the total number of accounts that meet your targeting criteria (Meta). Judge the ad set on cost per result, not on that estimate.
When should I still use interests as hard limits?
Use hard limits when reaching a specific audience matters more than the lowest cost. Meta’s wording is: “if reaching a specific audience is more important than getting best performance, select further limit your audience or further limit the reach of your ads”, then untick “Use as a suggestion” (Meta).
Common business reasons:
- A legal minimum age. Meta’s example is a product that can’t legally be bought by people under 21 (Meta).
- Where you can deliver. Keep location as a control and leave “Reach more people likely to respond to your ads” unselected.
- People you must not pay to reach, such as current customers in a prospecting campaign. Exclude them with a custom audience; see How do I stop paying to advertise to existing customers? Note that Advantage+ audience cannot exclude lookalike audiences (Meta).
- Languages your store supports.
Two costs come with it. Unticking suggestions can switch the ad set to “Advantage+ off” (Meta). And for conversion goals your interests may still expand through Advantage+ detailed targeting, so exclusions and controls, not interests, are the dependable limits.
How do I set up Advantage+ audience with interests as suggestions?
- Open Ads Manager, create a Sales campaign and go to the ad set’s Audience section, where Advantage+ audience is applied automatically when it is available.
- Set your limits under Controls: edit Locations, then select Show more controls to add a minimum age, custom audiences to exclude and languages.
- Leave “Reach more people likely to respond to your ads” unselected if you must not deliver outside your listed locations.
- Add your interests under Suggest an audience > Show settings > Detailed targeting, so Meta treats them as suggestions.
- Exclude existing customers with a customer-list custom audience under Show more controls; Advantage+ audience will not exclude lookalikes.
- Publish, then judge the ad set on cost per result in Ads Manager, not on the estimated audience size.
The paths follow Meta’s Create a campaign using Advantage+ audience and Choose audience settings articles. If your interests come from customer lists, the same source rules apply as for lookalikes: see What makes a good lookalike audience source?
How do I test Advantage+ audience against interests?
Meta’s A/B test splits the audience so “nobody sees both” versions, and it gives a custom-audience versus interest-audience strategy as its own example hypothesis (Meta: about A/B testing).
- Select your interest-targeted ad set in Ads Manager, click Duplicate and choose New split test campaign when prompted.
- Choose the audience variable, keep version A as your interest audience and set version B to Advantage+ audience with the same interests as suggestions.
- Give both versions the same budget, as Meta recommends, so the comparison is fair.
- Schedule the test for 1 to 30 days and aim for at least 80% estimated power, Meta’s recommendation for a likely significant result.
- Choose the winner metric before launch: the campaign’s cost per result or a specific metric such as cost per purchase.
- Do not test by switching ad sets on and off by hand; Meta warns this can overlap audiences and give unreliable results.
Steps 1, 2, 4 and 5 follow Meta’s Create an A/B test by duplicating an ad set, which Meta says is rolling out gradually; if you don’t see it, use A/B test in the Ads Manager toolbar (Meta). Steps 3 and 6 follow About A/B testing. Before you test, check the account basics in the Facebook ads audit checklist, and make sure the two versions do not share an audience with your other ad sets: see How do I check and fix audience overlap on Facebook?
Frequently asked questions
Does Advantage+ audience ignore my interests?
No. Interests you enter become suggestions. Meta shows your ads to people who match them, and to other audiences when it predicts better performance. It never delivers outside your controls: location, minimum age, excluded custom audiences and language. To make interests strict, select further limit and untick Use as a suggestion.
Can I keep existing customers out of Advantage+ audience?
Yes. Add a customer-list custom audience under Show more controls as an exclusion. Meta treats custom audience exclusions as controls even when “Use as a suggestion” is ticked. You cannot exclude a lookalike audience with Advantage+ audience, so exclude the customer list itself.
Why does my estimated audience size look wrong with Advantage+ on?
Meta says that when an audience is expanded through Advantage+, the estimated audience size no longer reflects the total number of people who meet your targeting criteria. Judge the ad set on cost per result and delivery rather than on that estimate, which is only a planning number.
Is Advantage+ audience available for every campaign?
No. Meta says campaigns in the special ad categories for financial products and services, employment or housing, and ads about social issues, elections or politics, do not have access to Advantage+ audience. For every other campaign it is applied automatically when available.
Can I set a minimum age above 18?
Yes. The minimum age is a control that Meta says can’t be overruled, so use it when your product has a legal age limit, such as 21. Advantage+ audience will not let you select ages under 18, and some countries set a higher floor.
