Instagram Ads vs Facebook Ads for Ecommerce (2026)
Should an online store run ads on Instagram or Facebook?
Run both from the same ad set unless you have a specific reason not to. Instagram and Facebook are placements in one Ads Manager and one auction, not separate products. In Meta's own experiment, Advantage+ placements delivered an 11.7% lower cost per action on average than manual placements. Then read the platform breakdown to see where sales come from.
Choosing between Instagram and Facebook is usually the wrong first question for a store. Both are sets of placements inside one Meta ad system: same Ads Manager, same auction, same pixel, same budget. The default setup sends one ad to both and lets delivery shift spend to wherever results are cheaper. You decide afterwards, from the platform breakdown, whether either one deserves its own budget or a different creative.
Are Instagram ads and Facebook ads different products?
No. Meta sells them through the same tool. Depending on the objective you choose, one campaign’s ads can appear on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Threads and Audience Network. Each surface where an ad can show is a placement (About ad placements across Meta technologies). There is no separate Instagram ad account and no separate Instagram auction.
Meta’s placement guide says your Facebook Page can serve as the voice of your ad on Instagram, so you can select the Instagram placement without setting up an Instagram account (Choose ad placements in Meta Ads Manager). Its Instagram Stories ads guide says the opposite, so connect an account if you have one.
Which placements does each platform offer?
Both platforms offer the same kinds of surfaces, with different names. The list below is Meta’s own, from About ad placements across Meta technologies.
| Surface | Facebook placements | Instagram placements |
|---|---|---|
| Feeds | Facebook feed (includes the Friends tab from March 2026) | Instagram feed; profile feed, shown on public profiles of people 18 and up |
| Stories | Facebook Stories | Instagram Stories |
| Reels | Facebook Reels; ads on Facebook Reels; in-stream ads for reels | Instagram Reels |
| Discovery | Marketplace; Business Explore; Notifications | Explore grid (Explore home) |
| Search | Facebook search results, next to Facebook and Marketplace results | Instagram search results |
| Desktop only | Right column | None listed |
Two Instagram details matter for setup. Profile feed ads cannot run alone: to show there, your ads must also run in Instagram feed (How to run ads in Instagram profile feed). And since late 2024, tall video ads (taller than 4:5) in Instagram feed are no longer cropped, so Meta tells you to keep key content inside the Reels safe zone (Best practices for Instagram video ads).
Should a store pick one platform or run both?
Run both by default. Three of Meta’s own statements point the same way:
- Meta measured the difference. In budget-controlled experiments on 147,000 campaigns run from 30 Aug to 7 Sep 2025, ad sets using Advantage+ placements delivered an 11.7% lower cost per action on average than ad sets using manual placements (About Advantage+ placements). That is Meta’s own study of its own feature, so treat it as a starting assumption to check in your account.
- More placements cost nothing extra. Meta says adding placements does not increase the cost of your ad. It increases the number of people who can see it (About ad placements across Meta technologies).
- Meta lets delivery allocate the budget. Meta recommends Advantage+ placements because it lets the delivery system try to make the most of your budget across placements (About ad placements across Meta technologies). Judge the result on cost per purchase, not CPM.
Advantage+ placements is the default for new ad sets, and excluding any placement turns the Advantage+ label off for that ad set (Choose ad placements in Meta Ads Manager). For what else the Advantage+ default changed, see what is Meta Advantage+ and how do I set it up in 2026?
When does it make sense to split Instagram and Facebook?
Split only when you can name the reason. These are the ones that hold up:
- Your creative only fits one place. A square image will not fill Reels or Stories. Meta’s preferred answer is asset customization: trim, crop and adjust the media for each placement inside one ad, rather than excluding placements (Best alternatives to excluding ad placements).
- Your business can only advertise on certain placements. Set this once as an ad account control. Meta applies account controls even when an ad set uses Advantage+ placements (Choose ad placements in Meta Ads Manager).
- You are testing a platform-specific idea. For example, a Reels-native video you want to judge against its own baseline. Before shifting budget into Reels, check should I move budget from Feed to Reels?
If you do exclude a placement, Meta offers a middle path in the placement settings for the Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales objectives. The option Allow limited spend to excluded placements lets up to 5% of the budget go to each excluded placement when that is likely to improve performance (Choose ad placements in Meta Ads Manager).
“My customers are on Instagram, not Facebook” is not a reason on its own. With Advantage+ placements, the delivery system allocates the ad set’s budget based on performance across placements, and the platform breakdown shows where the results came from (View ad results by platform, device and placement).
How do I see whether Facebook or Instagram sells more?
Use the breakdown in Ads Manager, not a separate campaign per platform:
- Open Ads Manager and click Campaigns, Ad sets or Ads.
- Click Breakdown, between Columns and Reports.
- Choose By delivery, then Platform, to split results into Facebook and Instagram.
- Switch to Placement to see feed, Stories, Reels and the rest separately.
- Compare cost per purchase and purchase value by row, over at least a few weeks of spend.
These steps follow View ad results by platform, device and placement. Meta labels platform and placement breakdown values as estimated, so read them as direction, not exact accounting. A placement with high reach and weak purchases is a known pattern: why do Reels ads get more reach but worse ROAS than Feed? explains how to read it before you cut it.
What should the creative look like on each platform?
Build one set of assets that works in vertical and square, and let placements pick from it. Meta’s Instagram guide recommends 9:16 or 1:1 formats and designing for sound-off viewing. It also reports that video now accounts for nearly half of all ad impressions on Instagram (Best practices for Instagram video ads). FAQ
Are Instagram ads cheaper than Facebook ads?
There is no reliable public number that settles it for your store, and Meta publishes none. Costs differ by audience, creative and placement, and a cheaper CPM on one platform says nothing about cost per purchase. Run both, then compare cost per purchase in the platform breakdown over a few weeks.
Can I run ads only on Instagram?
Yes. In the ad set’s Placements section, switch to manual placements and untick Facebook and the other platforms. Doing so turns Advantage+ placements off for that ad set. Meta’s own experiment found manual placements delivered a higher cost per action on average, so test it against a both-platform ad set first.
Do I need an Instagram account to run Instagram ads?
Meta’s pages disagree. Its placement guide says your Facebook Page can serve as the voice of your ad on Instagram, so no Instagram account is needed to select the placement. Its Instagram Stories ads guide says you need an Instagram account to run ads on Instagram. Connecting one avoids the question.
Should Facebook and Instagram get separate campaigns?
Usually not. Separate campaigns split your budget and your conversion data, and stop delivery from shifting spend toward the cheaper platform. Keep one ad set across both, read the platform breakdown, and split only for a named reason, such as a placement-specific creative test or an account-level placement restriction.
