Facebook Interest Targeting Gone? What Changed

Why did my Facebook detailed targeting options disappear?

Either Meta removed them or a setting hides them. Meta removed sensitive-topic interests from 19 January 2022, removed detailed targeting exclusions in 2025 and has merged many interests into broader groupings since 23 June 2025. Special ad categories, audiences that include under-18s and the Advantage+ audience layout also hide options that still exist.

Missing detailed targeting has two kinds of cause. Some options are gone for good: Meta deleted whole groups of interests in 2022, removed detailed targeting exclusions in 2025, has merged many interests into broader groupings since June 2025 and retires little-used options on a rolling basis. Others still exist but are hidden by a campaign or ad set setting. Check the settings first, then replace what Meta removed with audiences built from your own data.

Which detailed targeting options has Meta removed, and when?

Four documented changes account for most removals.

Sensitive-topic interests, from 19 January 2022

Meta announced on 9 November 2021 that from 19 January 2022 it would remove detailed targeting options relating to topics people may perceive as sensitive, such as causes, organizations or public figures relating to health, race or ethnicity, political affiliation, religion or sexual orientation (Removing certain ad targeting options). Meta’s examples include “Lung cancer awareness”, “World Diabetes Day”, “Catholic Church” and “Jewish holidays”. Meta’s developer notice for the same change added that it would also remove options “that have not been widely used because they may be redundant with others or too granular”, and that most affected campaigns could keep delivering until 17 March 2022 (Updating Meta’s Detailed Targeting options).

Detailed targeting exclusions, from 21 January 2025

On 21 January 2025 Meta announced it was removing detailed targeting exclusions, released in Marketing API v22, with developers given until 21 April 2025 to update their code (Removal of Detailed Targeting Exclusions). Meta’s reason: an advertiser test in which the median cost per conversion was 22.6% lower without detailed targeting exclusions than with them. In Ads Manager the removal started on 31 March 2025, and for boosted posts on 10 June 2025 (Updates to detailed targeting). What changed in practice:

  • New ad sets cannot use detailed targeting exclusions.
  • Meta removed them from active existing Ads Manager campaigns from 31 March 2025, and shows a warning banner on ad sets that still carry them.
  • You cannot duplicate and edit an ad set, or use a saved or draft audience, until its detailed targeting exclusions are removed.
  • Excluding your employer stays available, moved to account-level audience controls.
  • Custom audience exclusions still work.

Interests merged into broader groupings, from 23 June 2025

From 23 June 2025 Meta began combining related interests into new groupings, for example interests in the same sports category, film or music genre, car model or food and drink type (Updates to detailed targeting). If you pick an option that is no longer available, Ads Manager offers alternatives, and warning banners flag existing campaigns and saved audiences that use one. Campaigns created before 23 June 2025 could keep running until 15 January 2026; after that date, Meta says they stop delivering if the affected options have not been removed or replaced.

Options in deprecation, on a rolling basis

Meta says it “may deprecate certain targeting options and pause delivery for ad sets that target these objects” (Deprecated Targeting Terms). A deprecating option leaves an ad set delivering, but the ad set cannot be duplicated, and any update is rejected unless you remove the term. Once an option is no longer valid for delivery, Meta pauses the ad set.

Which settings hide options that still exist?

Cause When it applies What you see What to do
Advantage+ audience layout Sales, leads and app promotion objectives show Advantage+ on Detailed targeting sits under Suggest an audience, not in the main panel Select Show settings; to make it a hard limit, select Further limit the reach of your ads
Special ad category Housing, employment, or financial products and services Some demographic, behaviour and interest options missing; exclusions unavailable Use the options the category allows; don’t drop the category to get targeting back
Under-18s in the audience Minimum age below 18 Detailed targeting unavailable Set the minimum age to 18 if you don’t need to reach teens
Click-to-WhatsApp ads Ads that click to WhatsApp No detailed targeting field Rely on location, age and custom audiences
Advantage+ detailed targeting forced on Optimizing for link clicks, landing page views, conversions, value and similar goals No opt-out box Accept it as a suggestion, or change the optimization goal
Deprecating option The term is being retired Edits rejected until the term is removed Delete the term and republish

Two points behind the table. In the United States, using the financial products and services category has been required for financial campaigns since 21 January 2025, and Meta says an ad may be rejected if the right category is not chosen (About audiences for special ad categories); the full rules are in what are Meta’s ad rules for financial services? And in the Advantage+ layout, detailed targeting you add is a suggestion by default, which means Meta can show ads to people outside it (Use detailed targeting).

How do I find out why my options disappeared?

Work through the ad set in this order.

  1. Open the ad set in Ads Manager, find Audience, and select Show settings below Suggest an audience. If your interests appear there, nothing was removed: they are suggestions.
  2. Open the campaign in Ads Manager and check Special ad categories. If one is declared, missing options and missing exclusions are expected.
  3. Return to the ad set and check the minimum age. If it is below 18, detailed targeting is unavailable; raise it to 18 if you don’t need to reach teens.
  4. Check the ad’s destination. If it clicks to WhatsApp, detailed targeting is not available.
  5. Look for a warning banner at the top of the Ads Manager campaigns page and select See affected ad sets. Remove or replace the flagged options, then publish.
  6. Rebuild lost exclusions as custom audience exclusions, which Meta still supports and always applies as hard controls.

What should I use instead of removed interests?

Meta’s own suggestions, made when it removed the sensitive-topic options, were engagement custom audiences (people who liked your Page or watched your videos), lookalikes seeded from them, website custom audiences and location targeting (Removing certain ad targeting options). For a store, that translates into three moves:

  • Retarget engaged people with website, video and Instagram engagement custom audiences.
  • Seed lookalikes from buyers or engagers; Meta needs a source of at least 100 people and generally recommends 1,000 to 5,000 (Create a lookalike audience).
  • Let Advantage+ audience find people, with your remaining interests as suggestions.

Whether interests still beat broad delivery at all is a separate question, answered in should I use Advantage+ audience or interest targeting? and do interest and lookalike audiences still work on Meta? If narrower targeting has left an ad set struggling to spend, the Facebook ads delivery and spend guide covers the next checks.

Will my running ad sets stop when an option is removed?

It depends on the change, and Meta has handled each one differently. For the 2025 exclusions removal, Meta removed detailed targeting exclusions from active Ads Manager campaigns from 31 March 2025, although Meta’s January 2025 developer notice had said existing ad sets would keep them until any edit. For the June 2025 interest groupings, campaigns created before 23 June 2025 stop delivering after 15 January 2026 unless the affected options are removed or replaced. For the 2022 removals, Meta gave a window to 17 March 2022, after which it said edits to affected campaigns would not be possible. For options marked as deprecating, ad sets keep delivering, but edits are rejected until you delete the term, and an option that becomes invalid for delivery pauses the ad set. If you rely on an old ad set with retired options, plan the edit: whatever you change will force the targeting update with it.

FAQ

Can I still exclude people from my Facebook ads?

Yes, with custom audiences. Meta removed detailed targeting exclusions, meaning interests, behaviours and demographics, in 2025 (from 31 March in Ads Manager), but custom audience exclusions remain, such as past buyers or recent visitors. Employer exclusion moved to account-level audience controls. In Advantage+ audience, custom audience exclusions always apply as hard controls, even when your other settings are suggestions.

Why can’t I edit an old ad set that still runs?

The ad set probably targets an option Meta has retired. Meta’s developer documentation says ad sets with deprecating terms keep delivering but are rejected when updated unless the terms are removed. Delete the retired terms, then make your edit and publish.

Did Meta remove all interest targeting?

No. Detailed targeting still exists, and Meta’s help pages show how to add interests, behaviours and demographics in the ad set. What changed is the default: with Advantage+ audience, your interests act as suggestions Meta can go beyond. To make them hard limits, select Further limit the reach of your ads.

Why is detailed targeting greyed out for my financial ad?

Ads about housing, employment or financial products and services run in a special ad category, which limits or removes some detailed targeting options and does not allow detailed targeting exclusions. In the United States, Meta has required the financial products and services category for those campaigns since 21 January 2025, so leaving it off can get the ad rejected.
