Facebook Account Spending Limit Reached? What to Do
What happens when my Facebook account spending limit is reached?
Every ad in the ad account pauses and the account stops spending, although Ads Manager still lists the ads as active. An ad account admin can change, remove or reset the limit in Payment settings, and Meta says ads resume in about 15 minutes. A campaign spending limit works the same way for a single campaign.
An account spending limit is a cap you chose, so hitting it is not a fault. The account has spent the total you allowed, Meta pauses everything, and nothing restarts until an admin raises the cap, removes it or resets the amount spent to $0, each in about 15 minutes. Two things confuse people: Ads Manager keeps showing the ads as active, and the counter does not reset at month end unless you turned that on.
What stops when the account spending limit is hit?
Meta defines the account spending limit as a lifetime cap on the total your ad account can spend across all campaigns, counted from the time you set it. It doesn’t affect delivery or performance while you are under it. When spend reaches it, your ads pause and the account stops spending (About ad account spending limits).
Three details matter in practice:
- You get a notification, but Ads Manager still lists the ads as active. So a campaign that shows Active but has stopped spending can mean the account limit was hit.
- The amount spent does not reset by itself. Meta says it doesn’t reset after a set period, such as the end of the month (Set an ad account spending limit). Some accounts get the option of an automatic reset on the 1st of each month, alongside the manual lifetime limit.
- Accounts that pay with available funds can’t set an account spending limit at all, so if you prepay, a pause has a different cause.
Which spending limit did you actually hit?
Four different caps can pause spend, and they are fixed in different places. Meta’s own summary is How budgets, spending limits and your payment threshold differ.
| Limit | Who sets it | What it caps | When it resets | How to resume |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Account spending limit | An ad account admin | Lifetime spend across all campaigns | Manually, or on the 1st of the month if offered | Change, remove or reset it in Payment settings |
| Campaign spending limit | You, per campaign | Total spend of one campaign | No automatic reset described by Meta | Raise or remove it on the campaign in Ads Manager |
| Daily spending limit | Meta | Total account spend per day | Daily, at midnight in the ad account’s time zone | Wait, or verify a payment method or the business if offered |
| Ad set maximum spend limit | You, under Advantage+ campaign budget | One ad set’s spend, averaged over a Sunday to Saturday week | Weekly | Raise it on the ad set |
The fast test: if every campaign in the account stopped at once and Payment settings shows the account spending limit used up, it is the account limit. If one campaign stopped and the rest kept going, look at that campaign’s spending limit. If everything paused and the account limit still has room, it is usually Meta’s daily spending limit, covered below. The ad set row comes from About ad set spend limits with campaign budget.
How do I change, remove or reset an account spending limit?
You need to be an admin of the ad account. All three actions start in the same place.
- Open Payment settings from Ads Manager. Meta may ask you to re-enter your password.
- Scroll to the Account spending limit section and click Options.
- Choose Change to enter a new, higher limit, then click Save and Done.
- Or choose Remove to take the cap away entirely.
- Or reset the amount spent to $0 to keep the same cap; Meta’s reset article routes this through the same Remove or Change options.
- Wait about 15 minutes. Meta says the update applies in that time and your ads start running again.

Two errors you may see. A new limit can’t be lower than what the account has already spent, so if Meta rejects your number, enter a higher one or reset the amount spent first. And if you get an error about too many changes, Meta says to wait about an hour before trying again.
Should I raise the limit, remove it or reset it?
Pick by what the limit is for.
- Reset when the limit is your monthly budget and a new month has started. The cap stays the same, the counter goes back to $0, and you keep the guardrail.
- Change when the budget itself went up. Meta applies what you have already spent to the new limit, so a $5,000 cap raised to $7,000 after $5,000 of spend leaves $2,000 of room, not $7,000.
- Remove only if another control already caps spend, such as campaign lifetime budgets you watch. Without any cap, a budget typo has nothing to stop it.
You can check every past change in Billing: open the Transactions drop-down and select Account spending limit to see when it was set, updated, removed or reset (View your account spending limit history).
What happens when a campaign spending limit is reached?
A campaign spending limit is an adjustable cap on one campaign’s total spend. Meta says it doesn’t affect delivery, but once it is reached all of that campaign’s ad sets and ads stop and you get a notification. To resume, open the campaign in Ads Manager and raise or remove the limit. Meta’s example: a $35 campaign limit stops every ad set in the campaign once $35 is spent (About campaign spending limits).
One change to know: when Advantage+ campaign budget is on, Meta says campaign lifetime budgets take the place of campaign spending limits. If you can’t find the field on a newer campaign, that is why.
Why did my ads pause before my limit was reached?
If neither your budget nor your account spending limit was reached, Meta points to its own daily spending limit (About daily spending limits set by Meta). Meta sets it for most advertisers from advertising and payment history. When you reach it, ads pause and resume after the reset at 12:00 midnight in the ad account’s time zone. You can see it under Current balance in Payment settings. It usually rises on its own as you build history, follow policy and spend close to it, and it may be readjusted for a new business portfolio, ad account, Page or app.
Some advertisers can raise it faster (How to increase your daily spending limit). If you qualify, Payment settings shows a Verify payment method option; Meta may confirm the card with a one-time code or a temporary $1.00 hold. Verifying the business is the other route. How do I stop a spending limit from pausing a sale?
- Check the remaining amount in Payment settings before any planned push, and reset or raise the limit the day before, not on the day.
- Turn on the monthly automatic reset in Payment settings if Meta offers it, so a monthly cap rolls over without a manual step.
- Keep the account spending limit above the sum of your campaign lifetime budgets for the period, so the account cap never cuts a campaign short.
- Give a second person admin access to the ad account, since only an admin can change the limit.
Spending limits are one of several controls in the Facebook ads delivery and spend guide. A failed card is a different problem with a different fix: see why did my Meta ads payment fail?
Can software help?
Bach.ai (by Wittelsbach) connects to a Meta ad account, audits it daily, finds revenue leaks with an estimated revenue impact, and proposes fixes. One of its account checks flags an account spending limit that is 95% or more used, so you can raise or reset it before ads pause. On every plan, it applies a change on Meta only after you approve it.
FAQ
Does the account spending limit reset every month?
Not by default. Meta describes it as a lifetime limit, and the amount spent doesn’t reset after a period such as the end of the month. Some ad accounts can turn on an automatic reset on the 1st of each month; otherwise an admin resets the amount spent to $0 in Payment settings.
How long until my ads run again after I change the limit?
Meta says about 15 minutes for a change, a removal or a reset of the amount spent. After that your ads start running again without further action. If they don’t, check the daily spending limit under Current balance in Payment settings, since it pauses ads on its own schedule.
Why can’t I set an account spending limit?
Two common reasons. Only an admin of the ad account can set one. And Meta says accounts set up to pay with available funds, meaning prepaid balances, can’t use an account spending limit at all. Also, a new limit can’t be lower than what the account has already spent.
Does reaching my payment threshold pause ads?
No. Meta says your ads keep running after you reach your payment threshold; you are simply charged. Only budgets, spending limits and, for prepaid accounts, available funds pause your ads. If spend stopped right after a threshold charge, check Payment activity for a failed payment.
