Why Aren't My Ads Showing on Instagram? 6 Checks
Why are my Meta ads not showing on Instagram?
Six things keep Meta ads off Instagram: Instagram is unticked in placements, the objective or conversion location can't deliver there, the ad has no Instagram account or Page as identity, your Instagram account isn't professional or sits in another portfolio, the creative misses Instagram's specs, or Advantage+ placements is spending where results cost less.
Start with the numbers, not the settings. If Ads Manager shows a little Instagram delivery while Facebook takes most of the budget, the ad is eligible and Meta’s delivery system is choosing where it performs. If Instagram shows nothing at all, check whether a setup choice is keeping the ad off it: the placement, the conversion location, the identity, the account or the creative. Each of those has its own fix, and only the setup failures are errors.
Is my ad missing from Instagram, or just getting little delivery there?
Find out before you change anything. Meta’s breakdown filter splits results by platform, so you can see Instagram’s share directly (View ad results by platform, device and placement):
- Open Ads Manager and click Campaigns, Ad sets or Ads.
- Click Breakdown, between Columns and Reports.
- Under By delivery, choose Platform, or Placement for feed, Stories, Reels and Explore separately.
- Read the Instagram row: a few impressions means the ad is eligible and budget is going to other placements; no row means no delivery, so check the setup choices below.
Meta notes these breakdown values are estimated, but a platform with no row at all has had no delivery to read.
Which setup choices keep an ad off Instagram?
Work down the table. The first five are set by you; the sixth is the delivery system’s choice.
| Check | Where in Ads Manager | What blocks Instagram | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Placements | Ad set, Placements | Manual placements with Instagram unticked | Turn on Advantage+ placements, or tick Instagram |
| Objective, conversion location and format | Campaign objective; ad set Conversion | Some combinations cannot deliver to an Instagram placement, which Ads Manager marks “Ineligible” | Pick a conversion location or format that lists Instagram placements |
| Identity | Ad, Identity | No Instagram account and no Page selected, which stops the ad with an error | Choose your Instagram account, or a Page to stand in |
| Account connection | Meta Business Suite, Settings, Instagram accounts | A personal account, or one held in another business portfolio, cannot be added | Switch to a professional account and add it to your portfolio |
| Creative | Ad, Media | Media outside Instagram’s supported ratios or below its minimum size | Upload a crop per placement |
| Delivery choice | Breakdown, Platform | Advantage+ placements spends where results cost less | Leave it, or test Instagram in its own ad set |
Is Instagram selected in my placements, and does my objective allow it?
Open the ad set and read the Placements section. With Advantage+ placements on, Meta lets the delivery system allocate the ad set’s budget based on performance across all default placements, which include Instagram (About Advantage+ placements). With manual placements, Instagram runs only if you tick it under Platforms (How to create Instagram ads).
Meta’s objectives table shows Instagram placements for all six current objectives (awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion and sales), but Meta warns that “placement availability will vary based on the conversion location you select” (Instagram ad objectives). When you edit placements, a placement your objective or ad format cannot deliver to is labelled “Ineligible” (Ineligible placement messages). If Instagram carries that label, the conversion location or format is the cause, not the account.
Is my Instagram account connected so ads can use it?
Meta’s requirements for the Instagram placement are an Instagram profile as the face of your ads, images and videos that meet the feed or Stories requirements, and an objective that can use Instagram (About the Instagram ad placement). To add the account to your business portfolio (Add an Instagram account to your business portfolio):
- Switch the Instagram account to a professional account in the Instagram app (Settings, Account type and tools).
- Open Meta Business Suite settings for your business portfolio, with full control of that portfolio.
- Click Instagram accounts below Accounts in the left menu, then click Add.
- Click Add Instagram account, log in to Instagram and click Confirm.
- Open the ad in Ads Manager and, under Identity, choose the Instagram account.
Meta says each Instagram account can belong to only one business portfolio, and only people with access to the Instagram account’s ad accounts can use it to advertise. Once the account is added, new campaigns and ad sets include Instagram as a placement automatically.
If no Instagram account is chosen, Ads Manager shows: “You’re using Instagram as a placement. Please select an Instagram account to represent your business in your Instagram ads, or select a Facebook Page to use instead.” Selecting a Page clears the error, and the Page then represents your business on Instagram (Troubleshoot the connect an Instagram account error).
Does my creative fit Instagram’s placements?
Check the ratio and size against Meta’s specs. For Instagram feed, images can run from 1.91:1 landscape to 9:16 vertical, but taller media may be cropped to 4:5, and Meta asks for at least 1080 x 1080 pixels; feed video also runs 1.91:1 to 9:16, with at least 1080 x 1920 (Design requirements for Instagram feed ads). For Stories, Meta recommends 9:16 at 1080 x 1920, with a minimum of 600 x 1067 (Design requirements for Instagram Stories ads). Links typed into an Instagram ad’s caption are not clickable, so the destination must sit in the ad’s link field.
Use the media crop option for each placement during ad creation. The wider pre-launch checklist, including safe zones and captions, is in how do I know if my creative is ready for every placement? To choose formats in the first place, see which Meta ad format works best for D2C?
Why does Advantage+ put most of my budget on Facebook?
Because it is built to. Meta says Advantage+ placements look across all available placements “to identify the most efficient opportunities for every impression”. In Meta’s own experiment, ad sets using Advantage+ placements had an 11.7% lower cost per action on average than ad sets with manual placements, across 147,000 campaigns run from 30 August to 7 September 2025 (About Advantage+ placements).
So low Instagram delivery under Advantage+ is the delivery system’s cost choice, not a setup fault. If you need Instagram results for their own sake, run Instagram in a separate ad set and compare its cost per result with the main one before moving budget. If the whole ad set has stopped spending, the cause is wider than Instagram: see why are my Facebook ads not delivering? and How Facebook Ad Delivery and Budget Pacing Work.
FAQ
Can I run Instagram ads without an Instagram account?
Yes. Meta says that if you don’t have an Instagram account for your business, you can select a Facebook Page, which then represents your business in the Instagram ad. You cannot manage Instagram comments on those ads in Ads Manager unless you connect an Instagram profile.
Why can’t I select my Instagram account in Ads Manager?
Usually the account is personal, not professional, or it is not in the business portfolio that owns the ad account. Meta says personal accounts cannot be connected, each Instagram account can belong to only one portfolio, and only people with access to its ad accounts can advertise with it.
Do Instagram Stories ads have to be 9:16?
No, but 9:16 is recommended. Meta says Stories ads support all feed ratios from 1.91:1 to 4:5, with 1080 x 1920 as the recommended resolution and 600 x 1067 as the minimum. Meta gives the reason for 9:16: it fits the full-screen vertical format of Stories.
