Is Shopify Audiences Worth It for Meta Ads?
Is Shopify Audiences worth it for Meta ads?
Only if you qualify, and only after a test. It is limited to Shopify Plus stores on Shopify Payments in the United States or Canada, and exports four audiences to Meta. Shopify claims up to 2x more orders per retargeting dollar and up to 50% lower acquisition cost, but says results may vary, so run a 1-2 week A/B test.
For an eligible store, try it: Shopify lists Audiences among the tools built into Shopify Plus, and setup is three steps in the app. For everyone else the question is moot, because it is closed to stores outside Plus, outside Shopify Payments or outside the United States and Canada. Beyond the plan, the main cost is data, which participating merchants pool. Treat Shopify’s performance numbers as claims to test, not results to expect.
Who can use Shopify Audiences?
Shopify sets three conditions (Setting up Shopify Audiences):
- Plan: the store must be on Shopify Plus.
- Payments: the store must use Shopify Payments.
- Location: the store must be based in, and sell to, the United States or Canada.
Shopify Network Intelligence must also be turned on in your privacy settings (Shopify Audiences). To connect Meta, your Facebook account needs two-factor authentication and full control of the business account and ad account (Connecting to ad platforms).
Shopify Plus is sold on a 1-year or 3-year term, with a starting monthly price or a variable platform fee for more complex businesses, as shown on Shopify’s Plus pricing page (checked 2 Oct 2026). That page lists Audiences among Plus’s built-in features. Moving to Plus for Audiences alone is a bet on Shopify’s claims, because you cannot test it until you qualify.
What audiences does Shopify Audiences send to Meta?
After you connect Meta, Shopify exports four audiences to your ad account, usually within 24 hours (Types of audiences, Connecting to ad platforms).
| Audience | Who is in it, per Shopify | Refresh | Where to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retargeting Boost | People who engaged with your brand but have not bought from you | Every 1-7 days | Add to existing retargeting ad sets |
| Prospecting | People similar to buyers of your products or complementary products | Every 7-14 days | New or existing prospecting ad sets |
| Meta Lookalike | 3% of Meta users in the US and Canada, seeded from Retargeting Boost; about 9.1 million people | Managed by Meta | Prospecting ad sets |
| Existing Customers Plus | Your existing customers in the US and Canada | Not stated | Exclude from prospecting, include in remarketing, or add as an Advantage+ suggestion |
Shopify says the audiences are built from data and attributes shared by participating Shopify merchants, matched to your store’s attributes. You can preselect a retargeting ad set for Retargeting Boost inside the app; the other three you add in Ads Manager.
What results does Shopify claim?
Shopify’s product page makes three claims (Shopify Audiences, checked 2 Oct 2026):
- up to 2 times more orders for every dollar spent on retargeting with Retargeting Boost lists, compared with “the next-best available tactic”;
- up to 50% lower customer acquisition cost, compared with campaigns using only the ad platform’s targeting;
- 40% more existing customers excluded on average, using Existing Customers Plus as an exclusion.
The first two carry Shopify’s note that results may vary, and “as much as” sets a ceiling, not an average. The fair reading: Shopify says some campaigns have shown these results, and you have to find out whether your store is one of them.
How do I test whether it works for my store?
Use Meta’s A/B test, which splits the audience so nobody sees both versions; Meta advises against testing informally by switching ad sets on and off (About A/B testing).
- In the Shopify Audiences app, connect your Meta ad account and click Export audiences.
- In Ads Manager, duplicate your best prospecting ad set and add the Shopify Prospecting audience to the copy.
- Create an A/B test between the original and the copy, with the same budget for both.
- Choose cost per result, with purchases as the result, as the metric that decides the winner.
- Let it run 1 to 2 weeks before judging, which is the window Shopify suggests for new or changed ad sets (Using audiences).
- Repeat with Retargeting Boost in a retargeting ad set, and judge retargeting on incremental sales, not reported ROAS.
Retargeting results can flatter themselves, because some of those buyers would have bought anyway; is my retargeting campaign actually incremental? explains how to check.
What are the trade-offs?
Four trade-offs come from Shopify’s own documentation (FAQ):
- Your data helps other merchants. If you use Enhanced Services, the data you contribute is used to benefit other participating merchants, and Shopify will not tell you which merchants use the product.
- The lists are closed. You cannot see who is in an audience or add and remove people from one audience; you can only exclude customers from all audiences.
- Eligibility can lapse. If your store stops meeting the requirements, the audiences stop refreshing and are renamed “[Not maintained since -date-]” in your ad account.
- Reach is US and Canada only. The audiences contain people located in the United States and Canada.
The Conversions API is not required to use Shopify Audiences, but your Meta measurement still decides whether you can judge the test.
What can I do if I’m not eligible?
Build the same four jobs from your own data. A customer list of buyers covers the same job as Existing Customers Plus, as an exclusion; see how do I stop paying to advertise to existing customers? A lookalike seeded from buyers covers a similar job to the Prospecting and Lookalike audiences; see what is the minimum source audience size for a Meta lookalike? And Advantage+ audience can find new buyers with your audiences as suggestions. For other tools that sit beside Ads Manager, see the guide to Facebook ads tools and AI agents.
FAQ
Does Shopify Audiences cost extra on Shopify Plus?
Shopify lists Audiences among the features built into Shopify Plus and installs it from the Shopify App Store, and Shopify’s help pages and Plus pricing page show no separate price for it. Your costs are the Plus plan itself, the ad spend you put behind the audiences, and the store data you contribute through Shopify Network Intelligence.
Can I use Shopify Audiences outside the US and Canada?
No. Shopify limits it to Shopify Plus stores using Shopify Payments that operate in and sell to the United States or Canada, and the exported audiences contain people located in those two countries. If your store sells elsewhere, build audiences from your own customer list, pixel and engagement data instead.
Do I need the Conversions API for Shopify Audiences?
No. Shopify’s FAQ says the Conversions API is not required to use Shopify Audiences. You still need reliable purchase tracking in Meta to judge whether the audiences beat your current targeting, because an A/B test compares cost per purchase between versions.
How much budget should I put behind a Shopify audience?
Shopify suggests aiming for 2 to 3 impressions per person per week, based on 80% of the audience size. Its formula: CPM divided by 1,000, times audience size times 0.8, times 2 or 3, gives a weekly budget range. Use your own recent CPM from Ads Manager in the formula.
