How to Keep Likes When You Reuse a Facebook Ad
How do I reuse a Facebook ad and keep its likes?
Reuse the post itself. In Ads Manager, either duplicate the ad and tick Show existing reactions, comments and shares on new ads, or create a new ad, choose Use existing post and select the post by the ID shown in Page posts. Re-uploading the same image or video creates a new post with zero engagement.
Likes, comments and shares belong to a post, and every Facebook ad runs as one. Point a new ad at the same post and the social proof comes with it; rebuild the ad from the same image and you start at zero. Meta gives you two documented routes that keep the post, a handful of edits that quietly break it, and one trap with post IDs copied from a browser address bar.
Why does my new ad start with zero likes?
Because it is a different post. Meta gives every post a Page post ID, whether you create it on your Page or in Ads Manager (Find your Page post ID in Meta Ads Manager). When you build an ad from uploaded media, Ads Manager makes a new post with its own ID, so it has none of the old one’s reactions.
The engagement you see on an ad is engagement on that post. Meta’s guide to Instagram existing-post ads shows it: if you build an ad from an existing Facebook post and run it on Instagram, its engagement metrics, such as likes, will not include likes on a matching Instagram post (Create ads from existing Instagram posts). Meta also says reactions and comments from your ads show underneath your Facebook content, and that Ads Manager can count more than you see there, because it includes reactions people later removed and engagement from other placements such as Instagram (Understand why Page and post engagement metrics are different).
Which way of reusing an ad keeps its likes?
| Method | Keeps reactions, comments and shares? | Where you do it | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duplicate the ad with engagement ticked | Yes, when you tick the box | Ads Manager, Duplicate | Placement-customized ads carry it over only once |
| New ad with Use existing post | Yes, it runs the same post | Ads Manager, Ad setup | The post’s call to action must suit the objective |
| Boost the same post again | Yes, it is the same post | Your Page, Ad Center | Fewer objectives and targeting options |
| New ad from the same image or video | No, it is a new post | Ads Manager, Create ad | Starts with zero engagement |
| Edit the creative of a live ad | Old engagement may stop showing | Ads Manager, Edit | Meta warns earlier comments and likes may not be visible |

How do I duplicate an ad and keep its engagement?
Use this when the winning ad already sits in Ads Manager and you want a copy in another ad set or campaign (Duplicating ad campaigns in Meta Ads Manager):
- Open Ads Manager, click the Campaigns tab, then the Ads tab, and tick the ad you want to reuse.
- Click Duplicate, then choose Original campaign, Existing campaign or New campaign.
- Tick Show existing reactions, comments and shares on new ads.
- Click Duplicate, review the copy, then click Publish.
If the original ad uses creative customized for specific placements, Meta says you cannot carry its engagement over more than once. Ads created in Meta Business Suite or on your Page cannot be duplicated in Ads Manager at all; Meta says to manage them where they were made (Troubleshoot ad editing issues: error 1860014).
How do I reuse a post by its post ID?
Use this to put an organic post, or the post behind an older ad, into a new campaign (Create ads from existing posts in Meta Ads Manager):
- Open Ads Manager, click + Create, choose your objective and set up the campaign and ad set.
- Go to Identity in the ad and select your Facebook Page and, if applicable, your Instagram account.
- Go to Ad setup and choose Use existing post from the drop-down menu.
- Copy the post’s ID from the ID column in Page posts in Ads Manager, not from a post URL.
- Go to Ad creative, click Select post, search for that ID, select the post and click Continue.
- Choose a call to action that suits the objective, then click Publish.
Meta is specific about step 4: avoid post IDs copied from a URL and use the one in the ID column of Page posts. You can also read a post’s ID in Meta Business Suite, under Content, Published, in the post details. Meta lets you choose posts from your Facebook Feed, Instagram Feed and Stories, and branded content if you work with creators (How to customize ad creative using an existing post). For an existing Instagram story, only active stories qualify, not archived ones or highlights.
Placing the ad inside an ad set that is already running counts as adding a new ad, which Meta lists as a significant edit that sends the ad set back into learning (Significant edits and learning phase). If that worries you, read why is my Facebook ad set stuck in the learning phase? before you add it.
What breaks the link to the old likes?
Five documented behaviours catch people out:
- Editing a published ad’s creative. Meta warns that comments, likes and shares from before the edit may not be visible afterwards.
- Editing details on an existing-post ad. Meta says changing details on the ad, such as adding a phone number, also changes the original post.
- A call to action that clashes. A post whose button has a different goal cannot be used for that ad type. Meta’s example: a post with Shop now cannot become a call ad. Call-to-action buttons also cannot be edited on any ad that uses an existing post.
- A deleted post. Once a post is deleted from your Page, you cannot use it in new ads or edit ads that include it.
- Ad text you cannot change. For ads built from an existing Page post, Meta says the text may be pulled from the destination URL and lists this under ads whose text you can’t edit (About asset customization for placements).

Should I reuse the post or test fresh creative?
Reuse the post when the message is still right and you want its proof working in a new audience or campaign. Test fresh creative when results are falling, because old likes do not fix a tired ad. FAQ
Do likes on an Instagram ad carry over to Facebook?
No. Meta says an ad built from an existing Facebook post and shown on Instagram will not show engagement from a matching Instagram post. Ads Manager does count post engagement across Meta technologies, including Instagram, so its totals can exceed what you see under the Facebook post.
Can I keep likes if I change the ad’s image?
Not reliably. Changing the image is an edit to the ad’s creative, and Meta warns that comments, likes and shares from before an edit may not be visible afterwards. If you need new media, build a new ad and accept a fresh start, or keep the old ad running beside it.
Why can’t I find the post in Select post?
Check three things. The post must still exist on your Page, because deleted posts cannot be used. Its call to action must suit your objective. And if you searched by ID, use the ID from the ID column in Page posts in Ads Manager, not one copied from the post’s URL.
Does reusing an existing post reset the learning phase?
It depends on where the ad goes. Meta lists adding a new ad to an ad set as a significant edit, which sends a running ad set back into learning. A new ad set goes through its own learning phase from the start, whichever post its ad uses.
