Are Click-to-WhatsApp Ads Worth It for Ecommerce?
Are click-to-WhatsApp ads worth it for an online store?
Worth testing when buyers need answers before paying: higher-priced, sized, customised or unfamiliar products. The ad opens a WhatsApp chat instead of a product page, so someone must reply quickly. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, a reply within 24 hours opens a 72-hour window of free messages. For cheap impulse buys, a website ad usually sells better.
A click-to-WhatsApp ad swaps your product page for a person. That trade pays off when the product page cannot answer what stops the sale, such as fit, sizing, a custom order or trust in an unfamiliar brand. It loses when the buyer was ready to check out and now has to wait for a reply. Test it on the products where people already message you before they buy, and measure purchases, not conversations.
How do click-to-WhatsApp ads work?
The ad sends anyone who taps it straight into a WhatsApp conversation with your business. You can run it from Meta Ads Manager under the Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads or Sales objectives. To do that, you need a WhatsApp Business app account or a WhatsApp Business Platform (API) integration, connected to your Facebook Page or business portfolio (Create ads that click to WhatsApp in Ads Manager).
At the ad level you set a message template. With Start conversation, you write a greeting and suggested prompts that people can tap. A second template, Collect info with a form, uses WhatsApp Flows to gather details or bookings inside the chat; Meta notes it may not be available to you yet. You can also boost a Facebook Page post with the goal Get more messages and pick WhatsApp. That works for posts with external links, videos or single photos (Create ads that click to WhatsApp from your Facebook Page).
Meta says some messaging metrics, campaigns and features are unavailable for ads delivered to and from certain regions. The notice at the top of its setup article lists them, so check it before you plan a test.
When does a WhatsApp chat sell better than a product page?
When the buyer has a question that the page cannot answer and a fast human reply can. Good fits:
- Higher-priced products, where a buyer wants reassurance before paying and one answered question is worth the wait.
- Sized or fitted products, such as clothing, shoes, rings and furniture, where “which size am I?” stops the sale.
- Custom or made-to-order products, where the order itself needs details: engraving text, colours, dates.
- New or unfamiliar brands, where talking to a real person builds the trust a first-time buyer lacks. For the page-side version of this, see what trust signals should a D2C landing page have?
Poor fits are the opposite: cheap, simple products bought on impulse. There, a chat adds a step and a wait to a purchase that a product page and checkout would close in a minute.
If your problem is that people add to cart and then stall, that is a checkout leak first: see why is my cost per add-to-cart stable but cost per purchase doubling? before you move the sale into chat.
Which WhatsApp ad setup should a store use?
Meta offers two ways to put WhatsApp in an ad, besides a normal website ad. They differ in where the click lands.
| Setup | Where the tap goes | How purchases reach Meta | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website ad | Your product page | Pixel and Conversions API web events | Products that sell without a conversation |
| Website-to-WhatsApp ad | Your website in the in-app browser, with a Chat on WhatsApp button | Pixel and Conversions API web events | Stores that want both checkout and a chat option |
| Click-to-WhatsApp ad | A WhatsApp chat with your business | Conversations started; auto-detected purchases; purchase labels or orders in the WhatsApp Business app; Conversions API for business messaging | Products that need a conversation to sell |

The website-to-WhatsApp ad is the safer first test for most stores. People who are ready to buy check out, and people with a question tap the WhatsApp button at the bottom of the page. Meta’s setup puts it under browser add-ons for the Sales objective (How to set up website to WhatsApp ads).
How do I set up a click-to-WhatsApp ad for sales?
Meta’s steps for the Sales objective (Create ads that click to WhatsApp in Ads Manager):
- Connect a WhatsApp Business number to your Facebook Page or business portfolio, and make sure you are an admin of the Page.
- Open Ads Manager, click + Create, choose Sales and click Continue.
- Select Message destinations as the conversion location in the Conversion section.
- Choose the Facebook Page whose connected WhatsApp number should take the chats, then tick WhatsApp.
- Review the performance goal, budget, schedule and audience, then click Next.
- Create a Start conversation template with a greeting and suggested questions, click Save, finish the ad and publish.
If the WhatsApp option is greyed out, click Connect account, enter the number and continue. Write the suggested prompts as the questions buyers really ask, such as sizing or delivery time, so the first message gets straight to the point.
What do click-to-WhatsApp ads really cost?
Three costs, and the media is only one of them:
- Ad spend, bought in the same auction as any other Meta ad.
- Messaging fees, if you use the WhatsApp Business Platform. Since 1 July 2025 Meta charges per template message. When someone messages you from a click-to-WhatsApp ad and you reply within 24 hours, a free entry point window opens for 72 hours. During that window, any message you send is free (WhatsApp Business Platform pricing).
- People’s time. Every chat needs an answer, and the 24-hour rule rewards answering fast. If nobody can reply within hours, the ad pays for conversations that go cold.
Count the staff hours into your cost per sale. A chat that converts at a high rate but needs 20 minutes of attention is not cheap at volume.
How do I measure sales from WhatsApp ads?
This is the weak point, so plan it before launch. Meta gives you four signals, and they are not equal:
- Messaging conversations started counts accounts that messaged you for the first time or after 7 days of inactivity. For WhatsApp Business it counts only conversations started from ad clicks, and Meta marks the metric as in development (Messaging conversations started).
- Auto-detected purchases are purchases Meta infers from keywords and phrases in the conversation, such as a customer confirming an order (Auto-detected purchases). This is an estimate, not a record of payment.
- Purchase labels and orders in the WhatsApp Business app. If you use the app, you can turn on sharing of customer activity with Meta, then label chats that came from your ads as New order, Pending payment, Paid or Order complete, or create orders in the app (orders aren’t available in every country). Those count as purchase events when the chat is labelled within 7 days of the ad click (Optimize click-to-message ads for purchases).
- Conversions API for business messaging lets you, or your messaging partner, send real purchase events tied to the chat. For WhatsApp this needs a WhatsApp Business Platform integration (Meta recommends its Cloud API), because the required click ID (
ctwa_clid) arrives through the messages webhook (Conversions API for business messaging).
Only the last two tell Meta which chats became orders, so only they let you judge the ads on purchases rather than on conversations. Once you have shared 10 or more purchase events in 30 days, through either route, Meta offers a performance goal called Maximize number of purchases through messaging (Optimize click-to-message ads for purchases). If you already send web events, the same principles apply as in how do I set up Meta Conversions API correctly? The wider picture is in how do Meta Pixel and CAPI work together? Until purchase events flow, compare chat-driven orders against your store’s own order records, tagged by the chat.
FAQ
Do I need the WhatsApp Business API for click-to-WhatsApp ads?
No. Meta lets you run them with the WhatsApp Business app or with a WhatsApp Business Platform integration, as long as the number is connected to your Facebook Page or business portfolio. Both can report purchases: the app through chat labels and orders, the Platform through the Conversions API for business messaging.
Are messages from click-to-WhatsApp ads free?
On the WhatsApp Business Platform, mostly yes, if you are quick. When a customer messages you from the ad and you reply within 24 hours, a free entry point window opens for 72 hours, and every message you send in it is free. Outside that window, template messages are charged per message.
Can I optimise click-to-WhatsApp ads for purchases?
Yes, once you qualify. Meta’s performance goal Maximize number of purchases through messaging needs 10 or more purchase events shared in a prior 30-day period, from chats that started with your ads. You can share them by labelling chats in the WhatsApp Business app or through the Conversions API for business messaging.
Is a website-to-WhatsApp ad a better first test?
For most stores, yes. It sends people to your product page in the in-app browser with a Chat on WhatsApp button at the bottom. Buyers who are ready check out normally, so your pixel keeps measuring, and buyers with questions can still open a chat.
